Structured cabling is the system under which all low voltage wiring and digital signals which are used to transfer and exchange of data, signals, and communications control are deployed to a single cabling system.
Subsystems in which structured wiring is used in modern facilities include voice-data networks, video, audio, security, building automation, lighting, and any other system planned, designed, installed,
and configured as a single system.
With respect to materials and equipment used in a structured cabling system, it consists of:
- wiring
- passive equipment
- active equipment
As regards the structure, it is divided into:
- core network (backbone) that includes the central distribution network of digital signals from the data center to the individual subsystems or to the local business checkpoints
- Horizontal cabling that includes the distribution network from the control center of each subsystem with the equipment of end user positions
